Locate a Flex-Fuel Station Near You
Tuesday, May 31, 2011
Because E85 is less expensive and better for the environment, anyone with a flex fuel vehicle usually wants to find a station that sells it. Until the Open Fuel Standard Act becomes law, these stations are difficult to find. To make it easier, The Renewable Fuels Association now offers the Flex-Fuel Station Locator application that can be used for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. This is the most up to date source for locating E85 stations and can be downloaded from the App Store.
The Flex-Fuel Station Locator uses the E85 station database, hosted by the Alternative Fuels & Advanced Vehicles Data Center and the U.S. Department of Energy. This app provides the customer with location, fuel price, directions and a phone number to all E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) stations in their area.
The main screen features three button icons: “Nearest station”, “Favorites”, and “About.” Click the Nearest button, to pull up a map with the nearest stations. Click the fuel pump icon, to display information about the station, or click on the bubble for even more details.
From the station details screen, click “Get Directions” to open Google Maps and get driving directions. Click the star associated with that specific fuel pump, making it a Favorite, for stations frequently visited.
From the Google Maps screen, select "Search by city" in the lower corner. Return to the current location on the map at any time, by selecting the location icon to the left of the search icon. For a list of nearby stations, the list icon to the left of the location icon provides a full page of all the stations - including distance from current location and address.
Similar to the Flex-Fuel Station Locator, the RFA has also developed an E85 Point of Interest (POI) application for Garmin and TomTom GPS devices. Step-by-step downloading instructions are available here. There, consumers can download individual state data, a combination of states, or national data directly from their computer to the GPS device.
Here's another online locator: E85 (Ethanol Gasoline) Fuel Stations Locations - Locator Map and Directory.
As a reminder, E85 is an ethanol blended gasoline made up of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. This fuel is to be used in flex-fuel vehicles only, as they have been designed to operate on any level of ethanol blended gasoline. Owners should consult their owner’s manual to see if their vehicle is E85-compatable, or click here.
If you would like to see most fuel stations carry E85 and M85 (methanol), please urge your representative to co-sponsor the Open Fuel Standard Act. Click here for an easy way to do that.
