Bringing the Cost Down
Friday, September 30, 2011
I just watched a half-hour program, entitled Energy Challenges (follow that link and click on "video" to watch it).
The program discussed cellulosic ethanol. One of the biggest challenges to making cellulosic ethanol viable in the marketplace is getting the cost of the enzymes down low enough to make the resulting fuel competitive with gasoline. The enzymes break cellulose down into sugar. In the program, one sentence both impressed me and gave me confidence that the challenge can and will be overcome. It said:
Scientists have brought the cost of the enzymes down from five dollars per gallon of ethanol produced to twenty cents per gallon of ethanol produced.
